A tool for managing user identities, credentials, and access across on-premises and cloud environments
The old email address is still configured somewhere as a security / notification contact, even though it no longer appears as a sign‑in alias. Removing an alias does not automatically remove it from all verification and notification destinations.
Do the following checks and clean‑up steps on a computer (not a phone or tablet):
- Check all aliases and sign‑in preferences
- Go to
https://account.live.comand sign in. - Open Your info → Sign-in preferences.
- Confirm there are no old aliases listed. If any old email appears, remove it.
- Go to
- Check security verification info (where codes and account alerts go)
- Go to Security → Manage how I sign in (or similar wording).
- Look for any old email address under contact/security info.
- If the old email is present, remove it and add the new email or phone as the verification method.
- Check products and services that might still be tied to the old address
Even if the account aliases are updated, individual services can still store the old email for receipts and notifications.- Review email accounts for any Microsoft purchase receipts or subscription emails that show the old address as the contact.
- If found, update the contact email in the relevant service (for example, Xbox/Game Pass profile or payment profile) so that future subscription and billing emails use the new address.
- If notifications still go to the old address after changes
- Wait up to 24 hours for changes to propagate across all Microsoft services.
- Then test by updating a payment method or checking a subscription change to confirm the notification now goes to the new email.
If the old email is completely removed from aliases and security info, and all individual services have been updated, new Microsoft notifications should no longer be sent to that old address.
