Replying to or forwarding an email does not include the original message in the email body in legacy Outlook for Mac, any suggestions?

Hi @Den and @Barbara G

Microsoft has rolled out version 16.110.1 on Current Channel. Please update your device to this version to fix the issue.

Thanks to everyone for being patience.

Hi Den

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A Forum.

Could you please confirm which Outlook for Mac version you are currently using?

If you are using version 16.110, this appears to match a known issue that Microsoft has confirmed in Legacy Outlook for Mac. Specifically, the issue affects the inclusion of the original message content when replying to or forwarding emails. The product team is currently investigating this behavior, and a fix will be released once it becomes available.

For the latest updates, please refer to the following article, which will be updated as new information becomes available: Replying to or forwarding an email does not include the original message in the email body in legac…

As a workaround, you may want to consider downgrading to an earlier version of Outlook, if your environment allows it. Alternatively, you may temporarily switch to New Outlook until a fix is released.

If you would like to roll back to an earlier version of Outlook as a workaround, please try the following steps:

+Open any Office app > Help > Check for Updates > clear the checkbox for “Automatically keep Microsoft Apps up to date.”

+Quit all Office apps.

+Go to Applications > choose Microsoft Outlook > Move to Trash.

+Install the 16.109.3 package from this link: Update history for Office for Mac - Office release notes | Microsoft Learn

There is now another possible workaround instead of doing a Rollback to 16.109.

In legacy Outlook for Mac, replies and forwards should include the original message text by default. If they do not, check and adjust the reply/forward settings (this is controlled on the account, not per-message):

    1. In Outlook (desktop, classic/legacy), open the File menu.
    2. Select Options.
    3. Select Mail.
    4. Under Replies and forwards, configure:
      • For When replying to a message and When forwarding a message, choose one of:
        • Include original message text (default)
        • Include and indent original message
        • Prefix each line of the original message
        • Attach original message
      • Do not select Do not include original message (note this option is only available for replies, not forwards).
    5. Select OK to save.

After this, new replies and forwards should again contain the original message (either inline, indented, prefixed, or as an attachment, depending on the option chosen).

If the behavior persists even with these settings correctly configured, test in another Outlook client (for example, Outlook on the web) to confirm whether the issue is specific to the legacy Mac client, and consider resetting/recreating the Outlook profile.
