Why do I have to resubscribe when I already have an account that I am currently paying to Redmond, Washington?

I am currently paying on my Microsoft account. My last payment was 4/27/2026. Why must I resubscribe to an account that is already opened and current?

    1

    Open Word.

At the top right of Word, log out of Office.

Restart (not shut down) your PC, then log back into Office, is your subscription then recognized correctly.

    2

If not, log into your Microsoft account on this link, check the expiry date listed on your subscription, is that listed correctly.

    https://account.microsoft.com/services/

If not, go to the Payments and Billing section, is it indicated your payment has been processed correctly.

A current Microsoft account payment does not always mean that every Microsoft 365 or Office product in use is active on that same subscription. The “resubscribe,” “renew,” or “buy/activate” messages usually appear when the specific Microsoft 365 subscription tied to the app being used is:

    1. Past due or expired for that account, or
    2. Not yet activated with a product key, or
    3. Associated with a different Microsoft account than the one currently signed in to Office.

To verify that the subscription in use is really active and tied to the same account:

    1. Go to the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the same Microsoft account that is being paid on.
    2. Check the Microsoft 365 subscription listed there:
      • If recurring billing is on, the page shows the renewal date.
      • If recurring billing is off, the page shows the expiration date.
    3. If the subscription shows as expired or past due, pay or renew it from that page:
      • For past-due subscriptions, select Pay now and update the payment method if needed.
    4. If the subscription is active but Office apps still show “renew” or “resubscribe” messages:
      • Close all Office apps completely.
      • Reopen an app (for example, Word) and sign in with the same Microsoft account shown on the Services & subscriptions page.
      • If a physical card/box or email product key was purchased, make sure that key has been redeemed; the subscription does not start until the key is entered.

If the Services & subscriptions page shows one active subscription but the charge in question belongs to a different Microsoft account (for example, a second email address), it is possible to be paying for more than one subscription. In that case, sign in to each Microsoft account separately at https://account.microsoft.com/services and cancel the subscription that should no longer be used. Canceling a subscription does not close the Microsoft account itself.

If the expiration or billing status on the Services & subscriptions page does not match the payment date that was made, or if there is an unrecognized or duplicate charge, contact Microsoft Support directly from the subscription or billing help pages so they can review the specific account and payments.
