How do I ensure that my teams meeting opens with the correct account?

Hi,
I am really perplexed by this scenario. I have all of my accounts set up as mailboxes within the same outlook desktop mail profile.

I was sent a meeting invitation (just as an email not an invite) to my Zoho hosted email account and this appeared as an event in my office 365 CMS account.

When I went to open the meeting, it would not open in that account and instead forced itself to open on my personal account. I have removed that account from the team's account list and yet the meeting will not open.

I am confused as to why it won't open in the account which it appears in.

I really don't want people I work with having my personal email address.

Thanks for any help you are able to provide, I am unable to liaise with technical support because I keep getting an error message stating that my business account has an incorrect password, despite logging in with this to access my calendar et cetera.

looks like Teams is just using the sign‑in info it already had saved, not the account that got the meeting mail… sign out once → close Teams fully → open it again and sign in only with ur work account. if it still pops up with ur personal one, clear the Teams temporary files once — the new Teams keeps them in a different place, so the old folder might not be there.

To ensure Microsoft Teams meetings open with the correct account, you need to manage which account is active when you close the app, clear cached credentials, or select the account during the pre-join screen. Teams typically defaults to the account that was active when you last quit the application

Here are the best ways to fix this, ranked by effectiveness:

    1. The Active Sign-Out Method (Most Effective)

Sign Out: Open Teams, click your profile picture (or initials) in the top right, and select Sign out.

Sign Back In: Sign in with the correct account.

Quit & Restart: Completely quit Teams (right-click the Teams icon in the system tray and select Quit), then reopen it.

    1. Select Account in Pre-Join Screen

When clicking a meeting link, you can change the account before joining:

At the top center of the pre-join screen, look for your account name.

Click Change or select the dropdown menu to choose your preferred account.

If your account isn't listed, select Add another account

    1. Clear Old Credentials (Windows)

If Teams keeps reverting to an old or wrong account, remove saved credentials in Windows:

    Close Teams completely.

Search for Credential Manager in the Windows search bar and open it.

    Select Windows Credentials.

Under the "Generic Credentials" section, remove any entries related to "Microsoft Teams" or "msteams".

Relaunch Teams and sign in with the correct account

    1. Use Separate Platforms

To keep accounts completely separate, use the Teams Desktop App for your primary account and the Teams Web App in a browser (like Edge or Chrome) for your secondary/personal account

    1. Clear Teams Cache

If the wrong account is "stuck," clearing the cache can help:

    Quit Teams entirely.

Open File Explorer and navigate to %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams.

Delete all files and folders in this directory.

    Restart Teams

Note: For the best experience, use the Microsoft Edge browser when opening meeting options.

Most likely, the reason your Teams meeting opens with the wrong account is that Teams links meetings to the account signed into the Teams client, not necessarily the mailbox where the invite appeared. Even if your Zoho/CMS account exists in your Outlook profile, Teams doesn’t fully integrate with secondary mailboxes or non-Office 365 accounts. It defaults to the account signed in and associated with the meeting organizer or Teams license. Removing your personal account doesn’t always fix this because Teams may still have cached tokens pointing to it.

To ensure meetings open with the correct account, try aligning both Outlook and Teams to the account you want to use.

In Outlook Desktop, go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings. Select your Zoho/CMS account, click Set as Default, and restart Outlook and Teams. This should ensure that new meetings and emails default to the desired account.

In Outlook, go to the calendar view for your Zoho/CMS account, right-click a time slot, select New Meeting, and ensure the From field is set to your Zoho/CMS account. This links the meeting metadata to the correct account that Teams reads when opening it.

In Teams Desktop, click your profile picture, select Sign out from all accounts, close Teams completely, then sign in first with your desired Office 365 CMS account. This forces Teams to associate meetings with the correct account instead of cached personal accounts.

If the meeting was created by another account, open it in Outlook and add your CMS account as a co-organizer. This gives you control over the meeting link and prevents Teams from defaulting to your personal account.

In Outlook, go to File > Options > Calendar > Events and Invitations, ensure Add online meeting to all meetings is active, and that the correct account is selected. This makes sure new meetings automatically generate Teams links under the correct account.

If Teams still opens the wrong account, clear cached account associations. Close Teams, navigate to %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams, delete the contents of the Cache and IndexedDB folders, then restart Teams. This forces Teams to re-evaluate which account should open meetings.

Finally, if the meeting originated from an external account or non-Office 365 mailbox (like your Zoho account), Teams cannot open it directly under that mailbox because it lacks a Teams identity. In that case, copy the Teams meeting link from Outlook and manually open it in the Teams client signed in with your CMS account.
