Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
Hi Mick K,
Thank you for your follow‑up. I completely understand how frustrating this experience is.
What you’re seeing is unfortunately a known issue affecting some Microsoft accounts, where the sign‑in system incorrectly triggers a “too many attempts” message even before a password is entered. This can happen due to cached browser data, repeated background sign‑in attempts, or a temporary security lock being applied automatically on Microsoft’s side. Impacted users may include, but are not limited to, iOS users.
The good news is that this does not usually mean your password is wrong, and you shouldn’t normally have to reset it every time.
Please try the steps below in order while waiting Microsoft to work on a permanent fix, they often resolve the issue without another password reset:
- Sign in using an InPrivate / Incognito browser window
- Clear cookies and cache for Microsoft / Outlook sites, then retry
- Try signing in from a different browser or network (for example, a mobile hotspot)
- If you’re using a VPN, turn it off temporarily and try again
- If you can access your account security page, consider enabling Microsoft Authenticator, which often avoids this password loop
If the message continues to appear, the account may be under a temporary automated security restriction. In that case, the safest option is to stop attempting to sign in for a while and then try again later—repeated attempts can unfortunately prolong the lock.
Please feel free to come back and let me know how it goes, or if the issue persists. I’ll be happy to help further.
