Chicago Cubs, Porter Hodge and Craig Counsell

The Chicago Cubs are dealing with a tired bullpen, and reliever availability will be an issue the next couple of days, said manager Craig Counsell.
In the last week and a half, Hodge had become the Cubs’ No. 1 option in save situations after they moved Ryan Pressly into more of a seventh- and eighth-inning role. They are expected to take a closer-by-committee approach — at least in the short term.
The Cubs’ high-powered offense is getting back its customary leadoff hitter after the club activated left fielder Ian Happ from the 10-day injured list as part of a series of roster moves prior to Tuesday’s 14-1 win over the Marlins at loanDepot park.
The Chicago Cubs placed right-handed reliever Porter Hodge on the 15-day injured list with a left oblique strain, retroactive to May 18. In his place, the team recalled right-handed reliever Ethan Roberts.
“Whether you’re up or down, or early or late in the game, just to be able to know that everyone in the lineup can contribute, and at any point we can put up five, six, seven, eight runs in an inning is huge,” said Kyle Tucker, who has homered in two straight games. “We’re never out of the game if we have a team like that.”
The Cubs placed Hodge (oblique) on the 15-day injured list Tuesday. Hodge has been diagnosed with a left oblique strain and will miss at least the next couple weeks. In a corresponding move, the Cubs recalled Ethan Roberts from Triple-A Iowa.
With Porter Hodge unavailable because of a left oblique issue that will land him on the injured list, manager Craig Counsell turned to Palencia to close out the ninth inning Monday at LoanDepot Park. The 25-year-old hard-throwing right-hander retired the first two batters he faced and went ahead 0-2 on No. 8 hitter Derek Hill when he hung a slider.
