Christopher Schurr, a former Grand Rapids police officer, will not be retried in Patrick Lyoya's April 4, 2022, killing. A deadlocked jury resulted in a mistrial.

In civil cases, the plaintiff only needs to prove their version of events is more likely than the defendant's, a term referred to as the preponderance of evidence.

Schurr gave chase when Lyoya exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. The two engaged in a furious grappling match, and while Lyoya was face-down on the ground, Schurr claims that he shot Lyoya in the head because he feared for his life after Lyoya reached for the officer’s taser.
