Some homes in eastern Colorado were badly damaged after multiple tornadoes touched down in parts of Adams County and Elbert County.
A new tornado watch has been issued for southwestern Kansas and western Oklahoma until 10 p.m. CDT. According to the Storm Prediction Center, a few tornadoes are possible and a couple could be intense (EF3 or stronger). Widespread large hail (up to 3 inches in diameter) and damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph are all possible.
At least six tornado sightings were reported in eastern Colorado on Sunday afternoon with at least one storm forecasters called “extremely dangerous.”
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, tornado alley is known as a region across the central United States with relatively high tornado occurrences. This region shifts south in May and June, with tornado alley ranging into parts of Colorado near the Kansas and Wyoming border.
Tornadoes reported in Bennett, Colo., damaged buildings as forecasters said a severe storm system would roll through parts of the Midwest.
Following tornadic storms Sunday in Denver, the National Weather Service will conduct storm surveys to determine their intensity and path length. The Enhanced Fujita scale is used to rate tornadoes.
One Douglas County deputy had an eventful commute to work on Sunday after he saw a tornado forming around Elbert County.
