U.S. Senate Republicans on Thursday defeated a Democratic resolution calling for a review of human rights in El Salvador, focusing on conditions at a maximum-security prison holding people deported from the United States.

The measure would have compelled the administration to inform Congress about how it is complying with court orders involving deportees to El Salvador and to provide a human rights report on the nation.

Democrats attempted to use legislative tools available to them in the minority to try to challenge Donald Trump's agenda.
