A tentative agreement has been reached to end a New Jersey rail strike by raising the wages of locomotive engineers and trainees whose picketing halted the country’s third-largest transit system and threatened to snarl New York City work commutes this week.

New Jersey Transit trains will begin running again on Tuesday after the agency reached a tentative deal on Sunday with striking rail engineers on wage increases, ending a three-day work stoppage that had left tens of thousands of commuters to New York scrambling to find alternative transportation.

Talks aimed at settling a strike between train engineers and New Jersey’s huge commuter railroad resumed Saturday and are set to continue Sunday.
