ROME (AP) — Two high-profile Catholics, Pope Leo XIV and U.S. Vice President JD Vance, met Monday ahead of a flurry of U.S.-led diplomatic efforts to make progress on a ceasefire in Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Vice President JD Vance met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the first time since their squabble in the Oval Office earlier this year.

Vice President JD Vance will be in Rome this weekend for the inaugural Mass of Pope Leo XIV. Vance, who met with the late Pope Francis on Easter Sunday just hours before Francis’s death, will make another trip to the Vatican to greet Francis’s successor.
