Set up a OneNote Class Notebook

Create a class team in Microsoft Teams for Education

A OneNote Class Notebook is automatically created when you create a class team in Microsoft Teams for Education. If you don't already have a class team, follow the guidance in Get started with Microsoft Teams for Education on setting up a class team in Microsoft Teams for Education.

Set up a Class Notebook

In your class team, select the Class Notebook tab in the channel. This opens the new notebook for you to set up either as a blank notebook or reusing content from an existing notebook.

A Class Notebook has these default section groups:

  • Collaboration Space: shared editing for the whole class
  • Content Library: read-only for students, editable by teachers
  • Teacher-Only section: private to educators
  • Student Notebooks: one private notebook per student

You can change the names, delete them, and add new ones.

If you’re happy with these settings, choose Next and proceed to create your Class Notebook that's accessible to all the students and the teachers in the team.

Note

This module primarily shows the experience in OneNote for Windows. You can also open Class Notebook in OneNote on Mac, directly embedded in a Teams for Education class (if applicable), via your LMS (if you're using the Microsoft 365 LTI), or using OneNote web.

Activity

Create a OneNote Class Notebook, with the student sections that you want to have in place. Remember, at this point you don't need to create all of the sections for the year, as you can distribute them at any time.
