Intune for Education supports several enrollment methods for iOS and Windows devices. Use this article to compare your options and find the best fit for your school.
| Enrollment method | Platform | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Set up School PCs app | Windows | Bulk-configuring school-owned PCs using a USB provisioning package. |
| Apple Automated Device Enrollment | iOS | Automatically enrolling school-owned iPads at first power-on. |
| Enrollment managers | Windows | Distributing large-scale enrollment across IT staff or trusted faculty. |
| User self-enrollment | Windows | Letting trusted users, such as teachers, enroll their own devices. |
| Automatic enrollment | Windows | Automatically enrolling devices when users sign in with their school account. |
Run the Set up School PCs app
Use the Set up School PCs app to create and upload a single set of school-optimized settings to each of your Windows PCs. The app guides you through how to create an installation package that's appropriate for school. After you're done configuring settings for your network and devices, the app saves the package to a USB drive. Insert the USB drive directly into each student PC to automatically set up the device for students.
The app is compatible on PCs running:
- Windows 10, version 1703 and later
- Windows 11
- Windows 11 SE
Important
On October 14, 2025, Windows 10 reached end of support and no longer receives quality and feature updates. Windows 10 is an allowed version in Intune. Devices running this version can still enroll in Intune and use eligible features, but functionality isn't guaranteed and can vary.
When you're ready to create and apply a provisioning package, see Use Set up School PCs app. To learn more about the app's functionality, see Technical reference for the Set up School PCs app.
Give school faculty enrollment manager permissions
If you have a large number of devices to enroll, add enrollment managers to your school's Intune subscription. Enrollment managers are staff members with permission to enroll up to 1,000 devices on behalf of your school, which helps distribute the workload across IT staff or trusted faculty. For more information, see Add enrollment managers.
Allow users to enroll their own devices
You can allow trusted users, such as teachers, to enroll their own devices. When a user signs in with their school account, their device automatically joins Microsoft Entra ID and can enroll in Intune without IT intervention. For more information, see Automatic enrollment via Microsoft Entra join.
Enable automatic enrollment
To automatically enroll Windows devices, you must set up automatic enrollment in the Microsoft Intune admin center. Automatic enrollment connects Microsoft Entra ID and Intune so that when a user signs in with their school account, their device automatically enrolls with Intune. For more information about automatic enrollment, see Enable Windows automatic enrollment.
Tip
When you configure device settings for devices enrolling through automatic enrollment, we recommend that you set the maximum number of devices in the Microsoft Entra admin center to Unlimited. For more information about this setting, see Configure device settings.
Enroll iOS devices with Apple School Manager
Use Apple School Manager with Apple Automated Device Enrollment to automatically enroll school-owned iPads when they're powered on for the first time. After you set up iOS device management in Intune for Education and sync your Apple MDM server tokens, devices enroll automatically through Setup Assistant without requiring users to take any enrollment steps.
For more information, see Enroll iOS devices in Intune for Education.
