Unity Catalog semantics is a collection of tools to help you define standard business metrics, terms, and organizational structures on top of your catalog data. This ensures that both human users and AI tools interpret your data consistently under a single governance model.
Unity Catalog semantics consists of the following components:
- Metric views: Reusable SQL objects that define and govern business KPIs. Metric views are Unity Catalog securable objects that you create and govern with standard Unity Catalog privileges, using Catalog Explorer or SQL.
- Domains: A business-aligned organization layer that groups data assets so people can browse and find data by business purpose. See Domains and subdomains.
- Pages: Governed Pages that define business concepts for people and Genie One to reference as an authoritative source. See Pages.
- Certification and deprecation: Signals that mark a data asset as trusted or outdated. Certification adds a layer of authority on top of your definitions, which steers Genie One toward the assets your organization vouches for. See Flag data as certified or deprecated.
Together, these tools make up the human-modeled layer of the Genie Ontology: the business context that you define and govern explicitly. Genie One combines this modeled context with context it infers automatically from your assets and usage, forming a unified context layer that it draws on to answer questions.
Use the following pages to work with each component of Unity Catalog semantics:
| Page | Description |
|---|---|
| Unity Catalog metric views | Learn what metric views are, why they're more flexible than standard views, and how to create, query, model, and manage them. |
| Domains and subdomains | Create and manage domains and subdomains to organize data assets by business purpose in the Discover page. |
| Pages | Author and govern Pages that define business concepts for people and Genie One to reference as an authoritative source. |
| Flag data as certified or deprecated | Mark data assets as certified or deprecated to signal which data your organization vouches for. |
