Lack of access to Word Files - pre late July 2026

As your records will no doubt show my previous subscription to Micro Soft Word expired late last month.

I had not extended the subscription, because I intended to replace the aging iMAC I was using.

On 31 July 2026 I bought a new iMac and - in the same transaction - paid a subscription for current M365 personal package

As you know the set-up of the new iMac/Microsoft package has now been completed.

However, I have not been able to get full access to the numerous Word files that were created under the pre- 31 July 2026 arrangements. They come up screen, but it seems I am blocked from editing/printing/ deleting.

Your help would be much appreciated.

    I understand that the older documents open on the new iMac but cannot be edited or otherwise managed. The documents themselves are not tied to the previous subscription, so this is more likely an Office activation, update, or macOS file-permission issue.

    Please try the following:

    1. Open Word and select Word > About Word to confirm it shows Microsoft 365 and version 16.83 or later.
    2. Select Help > Check for Updates, install all available updates, then fully quit Word using Command + Q and reopen it. Microsoft notes that older Office versions on macOS can enter reduced-functionality mode after July 13, 2026. Refer here for more info: Update Microsoft 365 or Office on macOS or iOS
    3. In Word, sign out and sign back in using the Microsoft account associated with the new Microsoft 365 Personal subscription.
    4. If Word still does not allow editing, use Microsoft’s license removal tool and then reactivate Word with that account.
    5. For files that cannot be deleted, select one in Finder, press Command + I, and check Sharing & Permissions to ensure your Mac account has Read & Write access.
