"Always use energy saver" option enables energy saver when laptop is plugged in

I'm using a brand new Lenovo Legion Pro 5 laptop that I just finished setting up, and I'm going to use it for school, so I want the best battery life possible. The issue I'm facing is that using the "Always use energy saver" option keeps energy saver enabled at ALL times, even when the computer is plugged in, which feels very counterintuitive. Is there any way to make it so energy saver turns on the moment the computer is unplugged, no matter the battery percentage but it automatically turns off when plugged in?

    Hi Fladan,

I understand why you'd think Energy Saver current way of working is counterintuitive. Unfortunately, there isn't a built-in Windows setting that turn the feature off when the laptop is plugged in. Like its name suggests, "Always use energy saver" literally means always. When enabled, it's kept active regardless of whether the laptop is on battery or charged.

That said, if your purpose is to maximize your laptop's life, particularly its battery, I do have a few suggestions. They are only workarounds, so please expect that none behave exactly like the mode that you're looking for. Since you currently cannot change the percentage for when Energy saver is turned on, here's what you can do instead:

1 - Use Power Mode instead of Energy Saver

    • For a Legion Pro 5, Energy saver is often less useful than Power Modes configured correctly.
    • Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power Mode:
      • Plugged in = Balanced or Best performance
      • On battery = Best power efficiency
    • Windows can automatically adjust some power behavior based on AC vs battery.

2 - Create an automation script (advanced)

    • Use Task Scheduler, PowerShell (Admin), and Event Viewer power events
    • The laptop can detect AC connected/disconnected and automatically run respective scripts.
    • However, this can break the system due to its advanced nature, and is not recommended by Microsoft.

Again, I totally get where you're coming from, and I agree that an option to automatically disable Energy saver whenever plugged in would make sense. If you'd like to see that added, please submitting your feedback via Feedback Hub (press Win + F). The engineering teams monitor the channel closely and often review the suggestions there!
