EU AI Act Art. 50(2) — machine-readable marking of Azure Speech TTS output

Hello,

We use Azure AI Speech (Neural TTS, region westeurope) in a language-learning product: (a) batch synthesis of static learning content at build time, and (b) real-time synthesis of dialogue replies in a live voice-conversation feature. Under the AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689) the machine-readable marking obligation for synthetic audio under Art. 50(2) rests with the provider of the generating AI system; as a downstream deployer/provider we may rely on the upstream marking solution (Commission Guidelines C(2026) 5054 final, para. 74).

Could you point us to Microsoft's documentation on whether and how Azure Neural TTS output is marked/watermarked in a machine-readable way under Art. 50(2), and whether detection tooling is available? If no marking is currently applied, is it planned before 2 December 2026 (transitional period under Regulation (EU) 2026/1744)?

Based on the information currently published by Microsoft, Microsoft has not stated that the standard Azure AI Speech Neural Text-to-Speech service (prebuilt neural voices) automatically applies machine-readable marking or watermarking to all synthesized audio for compliance with Article 50(2) of the EU AI Act. Additionally, Microsoft has not publicly announced a timeline or commitment for this capability.

    At the moment, Microsoft’s sites do not show any machine‑readable marking for Azure Neural TTS under Article 50(2). The Azure AI Speech site, the Responsible AI site, and the EU AI Act update pages have no mention of marking or detection for TTS. There is also nothing posted about plans or timing for adding this before 2 December 2026. For now, the only thing possible is to check Azure AI Speech and Responsible AI updates from time to time.
