Finding specific messages or threads using search tools within Microsoft Teams chat history
Hi @Cosme Roberto Jesus Machado da Silva,
Thank you for reaching out with your question. I can understand why receiving a message from an unmanaged Teams account would raise concerns, especially when you’re trying to determine who the sender is.
To help identify the sender, it is possible to check available details directly within Microsoft Teams:
- Open the chat conversation in Teams
- Hover over or click on the sender’s profile (name or avatar)
- Review the profile card, where the email address or domain may be displayed (if shared by the external account)
Please note that the visibility of the sender’s email depends on how the external account is configured. In some cases, particularly with unmanaged or consumer accounts, only a display name may be shown and the full email address may not be available.
Regarding the IP address, this information is not accessible through Microsoft Teams, including the client, admin center, or audit logs. This limitation is by design to protect user privacy and comply with data protection standards.
Microsoft Teams does not expose the sender’s IP address for chat messages. This is because Teams audit logs only capture service-level activity metadata (such as user identity and timestamps), and do not include network-level details for messaging events.
If the message appears suspicious or unexpected, it is recommended to avoid responding and to review external access settings in Teams to control communication with external users.
I hope this information helps. Please try the steps and let me know whether they resolve the issue. If the problem persists, we can work together to find a solution.
As other users will also search for information in this community, your vote can significantly help those with similar inquiries quickly locate the most relevant resources.
Thank you for your kindness and for contributing to the forum.
