Publisher Files not converting to PDF

Publisher will not allow me to save as a pdf file. "Publisher cannot save this file." I have adobe acrobat on my computer. How do I fix this problem?

Frustrated with the attempt to fix my issue of converting Publisher files to PDF. When attempting to save as a word document, with only text, it converts but text doesn't hold the format so the text is all over the place.

Okay, I just switched to another computer. I store my files on an external hard drive so I plugged it into the other computer. It works fine! Not sure what is going on with my other computer, but at least I can move forward.

I had the same results with Export versus Save as. It failed to convert. I can convert to TIFF, (or other photo options), but I make too many changes later on for this to be helpful. I change prices, text, details, etc. I've used Publisher for several years and have saved so many files I don't know what I will be able to do after Publisher is gone.

Since both Save as and Export are failing, this points more to the app itself rather than the PDF option. Here is what you can try next:

Try using Repair Office feature:

Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps

Select Microsoft 365 / Office > Modify

Run Quick Repair, and if needed, follow with Online Repair (more thorough)

Next, check if the issue is file-specific:

Create a new blank publication

Add a small text box

Try saving as PDF

Regarding your concern about Publisher:

Publisher will continue working normally until October 2026, so you can keep editing your files for now.

None of these options worked. Even creating a small, empty text box failed to save as pdf. This was after running both Quick Repair and Online Repair.

I can see that you are having trouble with Publisher Files not converting to PDF

Here is a workaround you can try, this require you to create the PDF using Publisher’s Export option instead of Save As. Publisher supports exporting directly to PDF/XPS and Adobe Acrobat is not required for this process.

Here is how to do it:

Open the publication in Publisher.
Go to File > Export > Create PDF/XPS Document > Create PDF/XPS.
Enter a new file name, choose PDF as the file type, then select Options if you want to adjust the publish quality before saving.
Select Publish to create the PDF

PDF is intended as the final sharing/printing format and is designed to preserve the publication’s layout. If you need to make changes later, it is best to edit the original**.pub** file and then export a new PDF.

What are you supposed to do if you want to be able to continue making edits to the Publisher file once Publisher is no longer supported? I have followed your steps to export the pub file, which worked much better that converting (recommened by Microsoft), but then converting to a Word file has completely stuffed up formating of the entire file.
