Encountering an issue with Microsoft Licensing on a Surface

Hey Crew,

I'm encountering an odd issue on a surface device. It's showing a message that the Microsoft Windows licensing is going to expire? Why is that, and how can this be corrected? From my understanding, the device comes with a pre-installed Windows license key from Microsoft, so why would it be expiring?

I've tried to call Microsoft, and I've tried the online support bot, but neither has produced results. Any ideas here?

It might not be a permanent license

Some Surface devices, particularly refurbished ones or units purchased through certain business programs, come with a time-limited or trial version of Windows rather than a full retail license. Worth checking where the device was purchased from.

The license might have come from an organization

If this Surface was ever enrolled in a company or school’s Microsoft account, it may have been running on an organizational license that has since expired or been removed. This is really common with secondhand devices.

How to check your activation status

Go to Settings > System > Activation and see what it says there. If it shows something like “Subscription” or “Volume” license rather than “Digital License” or “Retail,” that tells you a lot about what kind of license is on there.

    What to do next

If the device is brand new and bought directly from Microsoft or an authorized retailer, I’d take it back to the store with your proof of purchase. That’s a clear warranty issue and they should sort it out.

If it’s not brand new, you may need to purchase a legitimate Windows license to get it properly activated. You can do that directly through Settings > Activation > Change product key.
