On 13 May 2026, my Azure virtual machine experienced a critical service disruption resulting in loss of remote connectivity and web application availability. The VM became inaccessible via standard management methods, including SSH and hosted web services. Additionally, the Azure control plane was unable to successfully deallocate, reboot, or restart the VM through the Azure Portal.

Initial investigation through the Azure Serial Console confirmed that the operating system continued booting and reached a multi-user operational state. Core services including Docker, SSH socket initialization, Azure Linux Agent, and NetBird services appeared to start successfully during boot. However, despite the VM appearing operational internally, external access to the VM and hosted applications remained unavailable.

The issue appears to be related to either:

A networking or routing failure potentially associated with recent NetBird VPN configuration changes
Azure VM agent or extension instability
An Azure host/fabric-level issue preventing proper VM state synchronization
A service or extension deadlock involving Azure Recovery Services snapshot/backup extensions

To help further isolate the issue and determine whether the behavior is related to Azure Compute, guest networking, VM Agent communication, VM extensions, or an underlying platform synchronization issue, could you please help confirm the following details:

What is the current VM provisioning state and power state shown in the Azure Portal (for example: Running, Failed, Updating, Stopped, etc.)?

What exactly happens when you attempt operations such as Reboot, Restart, Stop/Start, or Deallocate from the Azure Portal? If any error message appears, could you please share the exact error message or a screenshot?

Are you consistently able to access the VM through Azure Serial Console?

Are you able to connect to the VM directly using SSH/RDP through the public or private IP, or only through a Load Balancer/Application Gateway? Additionally, what exact behavior do you observe during connection attempts (connection timeout, connection refused, no route to host, etc.)?

Is the hosted web application completely unreachable, or does it return HTTP response codes such as 4xx or 5xx errors when accessed externally?

From the Azure Serial Console, could you confirm whether the following services are running successfully:

Azure Linux Agent (waagent)

SSH service

Docker service

Application/web services

If possible, could you please share the outputs from the following commands:

sudo systemctl status waagent

sudo systemctl status ssh

sudo systemctl status <application-service>

Under “Extensions + Applications” in the Azure Portal, are any VM extensions showing a “Failed,” “Transitioning,” or “Provisioning in progress” state?

From the Serial Console, could you please share the outputs of: ip route and df -h

Are other VMs within the same subnet or VNet experiencing similar connectivity or management operation issues, or is this issue isolated to a single VM?

Is Boot Diagnostics enabled for the VM, and do the latest Boot Diagnostics screenshots or serial logs show any kernel errors, networking failures, filesystem issues, or Azure agent-related errors during startup?

Has Azure Service Health reported any incidents, maintenance events, or host-level advisories in the affected region during the timeframe of the issue?

These details will help us narrow down whether the issue is related to guest networking/routing, VM Agent communication, extension deadlock, storage/resource exhaustion, or an Azure host/fabric-level synchronization problem.
