To verify and complete the upgrade from an Azure free trial to Pay-As-You-Go and protect existing resources, follow these steps:
- Confirm whether the subscription is still a Free Trial or Pay-As-You-Go
- In the Azure portal, open Subscriptions.
- Select Azure subscription 1.
- On the subscription details page, check the Offer field.
- If it shows something like Free Trial, the subscription has not yet been upgraded.
- If it shows Pay-As-You-Go (offer with pay-as-you-go rates), the upgrade is complete.
- If the subscription is still Free Trial, upgrade it
- Use the documented upgrade path for an Azure free account to move to pay-as-you-go rates: see Upgrade your Azure free account or Azure for Students Starter account.
- After upgrade:
- The subscription continues as a pay-as-you-go subscription.
- Free services for 12 months remain available; charges apply only for usage beyond free limits.
- Understand what happens when the free credit expires
- For an Azure free account (Free Trial):
- You receive $200 credit for 30 days.
- At the end of 30 days, if not upgraded, the subscription is disabled to prevent additional charges.
- To continue using services and avoid loss of access, the subscription must be upgraded to pay-as-you-go.
- For an Azure free account (Free Trial):
- Protect resources and data
- If the subscription is currently disabled because credit expired or a spending limit was reached, reactivation requires:
- Upgrading the subscription (if still Free Trial), or
- Removing the spending limit, depending on the specific offer.
- Once upgraded and reactivated, resources are brought back online and normal billing starts for non-free usage.
- If the subscription is currently disabled because credit expired or a spending limit was reached, reactivation requires:
- If the portal still shows Free Trial or there are issues upgrading
- If the upgrade option does not appear or the subscription remains disabled after following the documented steps, create a billing/support request so the Azure support team can check the subscription state and correct it.
These steps ensure the subscription is converted to pay-as-you-go and that services continue beyond the free trial period without being disabled.
