Microsoft Money 2004 Deluxe on Windows 11 has stopped running!

I have been running Microsoft Money 2004 Deluxe on Windows 11 but it stopped running about a week ago (displays the sign-in page but will not allow me to access the sign-in location even after I reinstalled from my original disk) I can however bring up the "sample" and "sometimes" allows me to restore my latest backup and use the app.. But although I can save my backup file, I cannot open Money after I close it for the day. Am aware that support was ended in 2011 but is there any hints as to what I can do to reinstall and run it .

Microsoft Money 2004 is an older app and can run into compatibility issues on the latest versions of Windows 11, especially after system or driver updates.

To try to get it working more reliably:

    1. Run the compatibility troubleshooter
      • Right‑click the Money 2004 shortcut or msmoney.exe.
      • Select Properties > Compatibility.
      • Use the Run compatibility troubleshooter option and follow the prompts to test recommended settings.
    2. Manually set compatibility mode
      • In the same Compatibility tab, select Run this program in compatibility mode for and choose an older Windows version that Money previously worked well on (for example, Windows 7 or Windows XP if available in the list).
      • Also enable Run this program as an administrator if available.
      • Select OK, then try starting Money again.
    3. Update Windows and device drivers
      • Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, and install all available updates.
      • Out‑of‑date or incompatible drivers (especially display/video, mouse, keyboard, and printer drivers) can cause older apps to hang or behave inconsistently. After Windows Update completes, if problems persist, update these device drivers from the hardware manufacturer’s site.
    4. Repair the installation (if listed in Apps/Programs)
      • Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
      • If Money appears there, select the More icon > Advanced options and use Repair or Reset if available.
      • If it appears only in Control Panel, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, right‑click Microsoft Money, and choose Repair or Change if offered, then follow the prompts.
    5. If the app opens but behaves erratically (e.g., sometimes opens only the sample file, or fails after closing):
      • Re‑run the compatibility troubleshooter and confirm the chosen settings.
      • Ensure all device drivers are current via Windows Update as above.

If these steps do not stabilize Money 2004, the issue is likely due to deeper incompatibilities between this legacy application and recent Windows 11 changes, and there may be no fully reliable fix beyond these compatibility and repair options.
