Phone Link STILL not reliable

Been a Phone Link user from the beginning, before the name change a few years ago.

It has ALWAYS given me grief with staying connected and it continues to this day. And before I hear "works for me" why then are there continued frequent updates to Phone Link and Link to Windows on android (likely iPhone too). No new features, etc. but plenty of updates probably trying to solve the lingering issues with connecting a phone to a PC and perhaps other stuff. No release notes to verify just my gut feeling.

Windows 10 was a problem. Now Windows 11 too for me. Phone within a few inches of PC and a few feet from router/gateway.

And btw, what is this thing called PAN (Personal Area Network) which appears in settings under my phone, which is a Samsung Galaxy A25 running android 16 with apps fully up to date. PC is a new Surface Pro 12" also fully up to date.

I was having very bad luck getting phone link to work. I happened to put my phone directly on my computer and phone link app worked great. I suspected that the Bluetooth signal for my motherboards onboard bluetooth was not strong enough, so I ordered a Bluetooth adapter with an external antenna. I can report that the phone link app works great for me now. This is the bluetooth adapter I purchased: https://amzn.to/4vKMtir

    Hi David,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand how frustrating repeated Phone Link disconnects can be. Based on the details you shared, please follow these steps:

1, Reset the Bluetooth + Wi‑Fi Link Layer

    Phone Link depends on both:

    • Wi‑Fi (primary data channel)
    • Bluetooth (control channel)

    To refresh both sides cleanly:

    On Windows

    • Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Remove your phone
    • Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced network settings > Reset network adapters (Wi‑Fi + PAN)

    On Samsung

    • Settings > Connections > More connection settings > Reset mobile network settings
    • Toggle Nearby device scanning ON (Samsung requirement for stable Link to Windows)

2, Disable Samsung Battery Restrictions on “Link to Windows”

Open Android settings > Apps > Link to Windows > Battery > set to Unrestricted Also turn off:

    • “Pause app activity if unused”
    • “Adaptive battery” (optional but helpful)

3, Re‑pair Using the Modern Connection Flow

    On the phone:

    • Open Link to Windows > Menu > Re‑link with PC

    On Windows:

    • Open Phone Link > Settings > My Devices > Unlink this PC > Sign in and re‑pair

The initial response might not address the problem. So, if your problem persists or you need any assistance, feel free to ask me by clicking "Add Comment" or "Post Answer" if you cannot add comment. This helps me can read your follow up. Thanks for your effort.
