My Surface Duo 2 loses randomly ability to browse the web. Ping shows Internet connection interruptions... is it the phone or the net???

My Surface Duo 2 loses randomly ability to browse the web. The Edge or Firefox are unable to navigate and a ping test shows lots of errors appearing randomly. It can be after several hours without any issue, or stay wrong for long whiles. Both browsers fail exactly the same and they don't interfere one the other, it happens the same if you close one of them.

Latency uses to be too high even when it is working OK, and for instance a 64byte ping round delay is about 30-60ms in 5G depending on coverage quality (which still seems to be a lot slow for NR-NSA!) and not much more in 4G (40-80ms). In fact latency in 5G is hardly distingushable from 4G. My Surface Go LTE pings last about 3ms in the best case and up to 30ms in 4G, so the Duo 2 is really slow even when its Internet does not crack. But when it does, it stays many minutes with random behavour and a lot of errors, ping lasting to to 300ms or more or just not reaching, or, when browsing, simple unable to reach the target website.

The Surface with LTE with me checked repatedly does not give any error in the same locations and moments.

I tried by changing several adjustments without any result:

  • not to use 5G. The prob is the same in 4G.
  • Change the APN protocol from IPv4/IPv6 auto to IPv4 only. No result.
  • Change private DNS from "No" to auto". No result.

The only thing that works normally (but not always) is to switch the phone off and on. Just to add, the problem happens also more after moving from a place to other, outdoor to indoor or vv, but also not always.

I am not sure if the cuts are for the complete Internet connectivity or only to reach IP addresses / DNS's. I know only from the browsing and the ping.

I called to the support and somebody asked me to return the device. This is very disturbing for me as I use the phone continuously and I have installed my work apps. I think there should be some SW adjustment or restoring tat could be tried.

I have the phone since november and the problem is more or less since the beginning but I think that it happens more and more often as times passes.

In january I installed to the phone the Slim Pen Cover which covers the front face and allows to charge the pen magnetically or via NFC or both (I am not sure). I wonder if this is penalizing the antennas coverage / performance.

AFter consideration, I think that only mobile data are corrupted. WIfi errors only produce in particular cases, maybe due to Wifi quality. Mobile errors are constant.

It seems to be something related to Internet configuration, not to the data conections themselves... But not the mobile data Internet but maybe the navigator?

I use both Edge and Firefox. There are errors with both of them, no difference, as with mobile data.

Delays are really large. A ping takes hundreds of ms (200-700) round trip, while my PC's need only 3ms using WIfi.

Thanks Dale, I haven't... I checked the config with the operator and it is perfectly OK, and I used this SIM in another mobile after receivbing this without any problem.

Most of the problems start after a while browsing the web, I don't see a connection with SIM failure.

But I was thinking on trying with a prepay SIM of a different operator....

I am asking also somebody to ping me and observe the availability and round trip delays.... the Duo pings to anywhere seem to be very long

Have you requested a new SIM card from your carrier?

I am checking all the time the failure so I can add some data...

    • I ckecked the SIM configuration with the operator and it is fine
    • errors appear normally after browsing for some minutes, at ant time of the day, and any place
    • I have observed a strange behaviour as to the failures and the network type handover (between 5G/4G/3G). For instance, yesterday I was in a town with poor 5G coverage. The phone didn't switch to 4G (or 3G, as here is common that we have more 5G in 4G gaps because of a operator policy that makes use of 5G to extend total coverage) even if the signal level was very poor (-100dBm). Then, ping check errors started to appear but the mobile didn't switch to 4G or 3G yet. Then I passed inside a house, and the phone inmediateñy switched to 3G... and the 3G signal level was -50dBm! I have experienced the same more than once, having errors outdoors and coming to a better behaviour indoors (but with very long delays anyway)

Another curious issue is that most of the times when I change the preference for 5G to 4G (thus discarding 5G) the phone goes inmediately to 3G. But if I switch the phone off and on, it goes to 4G. It is remarkable because I checked this in 3 places that typical signal values indoors are: 5G -100dBm, 4G -90...-95dBm, 3G -50dBm!, 50dB difference between 3G and 4G/5G. What to think about the antenna coverage?

Please, I would be very thankful if MS technical staff can help me. I have already opened a service order to send the phone in guarante but I would be very happy to discover tht it is not necessary.
